AI SEO is the work of making a business findable and quotable inside AI-generated answers — ChatGPT, Google’s AI surfaces, Perplexity, and similar — in addition to the classic blue-link results. The underlying inputs are largely the same: crawlable pages, clear entities, factual accuracy, and structured data. What changes is that the answer, not the click, becomes the first point of contact.
The term is being sold hard right now, and much of the selling depends on you believing everything you know about search is obsolete. It is not. This article separates what genuinely changes for AI SEO in India from what stays exactly the same — so you can invest in the real differences instead of paying for repackaged fundamentals.
What “AI SEO” actually refers to
When people say AI SEO, they usually mean visibility across three kinds of surface:
- Assistant answers — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot and similar, where a user asks a question and receives a composed answer, sometimes with cited sources.
- AI-augmented search results — Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode, where a generated summary sits above or alongside the classic results.
- Classic search, still — the blue links have not gone anywhere, and for most businesses they still carry most of the traffic.
One thing AI SEO is not: a separate ranking system you can buy your way into. There is no submission form for ChatGPT, no paid placement in an AI Overview, and no provider with a special relationship that gets you cited. Anyone selling access is selling something that does not exist.
What genuinely changes
Retrieval and citation replace ranking as the visible outcome
Classic SEO competes for a position on a list. Assistants work differently: when they answer with sources, they typically run a search at answer time, retrieve a handful of pages, and compose a reply from the passages they can parse and reconcile. You are no longer trying to be tenth-best-to-first on a results page — you are trying to be one of the few sources reachable, relevant, and consistent enough to be quoted. Position is a spectrum; citation is closer to a threshold.
That also changes measurement. There is no “rank tracker” for a non-deterministic answer engine. What you can measure is referral traffic from AI hostnames, dated and repeatable prompt sampling, and whether your pages are being fetched at all — an honest AI-search programme says plainly which of these it reports and which it cannot.
Content needs to be answer-shaped
Assistants quote passages, not pages. A section that survives being lifted out alone — a clear question, a direct 40–60 word answer, then supporting depth — is far more quotable than a thousand words of build-up before the point. This is the single biggest editorial change: write the answer first, then the argument. It happens to make pages better for human readers too, which is why it was already good practice before anyone called it AEO.
Crawler access becomes an explicit decision
Your robots.txt now carries a policy question it never used to. AI providers operate distinct crawlers for distinct purposes — OpenAI, for example, documents OAI-SearchBot for its search features and GPTBot for model training, and other providers publish their own user agents. Blocking everything means assistants cannot retrieve your pages when composing answers; allowing everything means also feeding training pipelines you may not want to feed. The point is not one correct setting — it is that this is now a deliberate choice, made per crawler, verified against each provider’s current documentation rather than assumed.
Entity clarity becomes load-bearing
An engine composing an answer must be confident about who you are: one consistent business name, address, and description across your site and public profiles; Organization markup with `sameAs` links to profiles that genuinely exist; no collision with similarly named businesses. This was always ranking-adjacent hygiene. In a world where the machine paraphrases you to a customer who may never visit your site, it is now the substance of the work.
What does not change
This list matters more than the previous one, because it is where the budget-wasting pitches live.
- Helpful content still wins. An assistant seeking a trustworthy passage and a search engine seeking a useful page are pointed at the same target. Thin, mass-generated content fails in both places — generative surfaces are arguably harsher on it, because unverifiable text does not survive being cross-checked.
- Technical hygiene still gates everything. A page that cannot be crawled, renders only with JavaScript the fetcher will not execute, or hides behind conflicting canonicals is invisible to AI search for the same reasons it struggles in classic search. Fix crawlability first; it is the entry fee for both.
- Real authority still compounds. Engines composing answers cross-reference sources. Being mentioned, linked, and described consistently by third parties makes you more corroboratable — the same authority that classic SEO builds, doing the same job under a new name.
- Honest measurement still matters. No one can guarantee a citation in an AI answer, just as no one could ever honestly guarantee a ranking. The refusal to promise is the same test of a provider it always was.

How to tell whether AI surfaces already send you anything
Open your analytics and look at referral hostnames: `chatgpt.com`, `perplexity.ai`, `copilot.microsoft.com` and similar. Expect small numbers — these channels are early. But watch the quality, not just the volume. In our own GA4 (28 days to 31 July 2026), chatgpt.com referrals showed a 66.67% engagement rate — higher than Google organic’s 61.76% on the same site. But it illustrates the pattern worth checking on your own data: a visitor who arrives after an assistant has already answered their question tends to arrive with intent.
Be equally clear about what you cannot measure: how often you are cited without a click, what share of answers mention you, or why one session cites you and the next does not. Any report claiming precision on those today is overstating what the tooling can see.
A practical checklist for the next 30 days
- Decide crawler access deliberately. Review robots.txt against each AI provider’s current published user agents. Distinguish search-side crawlers from training crawlers and choose per bot, on purpose.
- Reshape your five most important pages. Give each a direct-answer opening, question-shaped headings, and sections that make sense quoted alone.
- Audit entity consistency. Same name, address, and description everywhere; Organization schema with honest `sameAs` links; no markup claiming reviews or ratings you do not have.
- Set up referral tracking. Segment AI hostnames in analytics now, so you have a baseline before the numbers grow.
- Run dated prompt samples. Ask the major assistants the questions your customers ask, and record the answers with dates. Non-deterministic, yes — but a dated series is evidence; a single screenshot is an anecdote.
